Style Series: Imitation of Life

The B&G Society Modernizes the styles of vintage African American divas in the fashion and entertainment industry for today’s young sophisticated Belle.

Mimi of Everydaymimi.wordpress.com looking like a today's version of Donyale Luna in a chic and slender sequined dress.

On my Blackberry Messenger, I noticed one of my buddies had the late African American movie actress Dorothy Dandridge as her image icon. I made the statement that this is the type of beauty, class and elegance that  is not being shown ENOUGH to our younger FEMALE generation. In this series, I compiled a Part 1 episode of modern Spring/Summer 2010 styles for Today’s African American Belles between the ages of 18-25 that inspired by vintage fashion models, movie stars, and popular  singers of the African American Heritage. For example, the pictured on the top right is of  my Facebook friend/blogger Mimi of Everyday Mimi, reminded me of a modern-day Donyale Luna who is arguably known as the first black Supermodel (pictured top  left).

Allot of young ladies like to wear short cocktail dresses to trendy parties, weddings, or proms. For the Spring/Summer 2010 season, I presented modern looks from vintage photographs of late movie star Dororthy Dandridge, Pop Diva Diana Ross, late R&B/Soul  glamazon Phyllis Hyman, and the luminous fashion runway diva Pat Cleveland.

Vintage Hollywood photos of movie star Dorothy Dandridge showed her glowing luxurious style. I was inspired by her hairstyle and picked this Coral one shoulder mesh overlay dress with fabric corsage at shoulder by Forever Unique. I accessorized this cocktail dress with champagne colored accessories to bring out the shimmery tones of the garment.

Forever Unique Coral dress, $280 (USD)
Stuart Weitzman Champagne leather platform court shoe $207 (USD)
Jessica McClintock Rhinestone Frame Clutch $68 (USD)
ASOS Pearl And Bead Multi Row Stretch Bracelet Set $11.97 (USD)
LK DESIGNS Yellow Gold Drops Earrings  $132.39 (USD)

Diana Ross was big on gowns, jewelry, and hair (lol). I modernize this particular gown with a short Coral puffball dress and accessorized with solid gold drop earrings, bangles, slingbacks, and snakeskin clutch.

Forever Unique Coral puffball skirt dress, $280 (USD)
Oscar de la Renta Metallic rosette slingbacks, $243.25 (USD)
Claudia Canova gold faux snake shell shape clutch bag, $52 (USD)
ABS by Allen Schwartz Women’s Gold Coil Bracelet,$150 (USD)
ABS Allen Schwartz Young & Restless Rhinestone & Rope Chain Drop Earrings $73 (USD)

One of R&B's sultry angels, Phyllis Hyman was well known for wearing big chandelier earrings and necklaces. Young ladies still wear black dresses in the summertime. Silver accessories are the right pieces to bring out a luminous glow of the black dress. A curvaceous woman can definitely turn a Gents' head with this look.

Riller & Fount  Fiona Jersey Drapery Dress, 165 (USD)

Tis the season for All White Affairs...this style channels the 70s and 80s runway queen Patricia Cleveland. A lovely flower hair pin, with pearl jewelry and a sexy stiletto sandal is all that is needed for a sophisticated Belle.
