Hip-Hop Violinist, Miri Ben-Ari, Keeps the Hip-Hop Genre Alive

Miri Ben-Ari, The Hip Hop Violinist

I never intended to play an instrument in grammar school. I wanted to go to dance class. Due to a financial setback, parents say that dance classes were a no go…so I took up something for free in school…instrument class. It was a great getaway from regular classes in elementary and middle school. I started off with the clarinet in the 5th grade and then went to violin in the 7th grade. I played the violin until I graduated from Newark Arts High School and was happy that I did not have to play it anymore. Later on, I never thought this instrument could be put to a more creative use in a different music genre until I saw violinist Miri Ben-Ari on rapper Twista’s video “Overnight Celebrity” and in concert along with Kanye West and John Legend located at Rutgers-New Brunswick in 2004. On that concert stage,  she played every Hip-hop and R&B tune from Kanye West’s “Workout Plan” (The College Dropout)  to singer’s Mya’s “Case of The Ex” (Fear of Flying). If hip-hop died down, Miri Ben-Ari knows how to  resurrect it by playing these strings with her immaculate soul.
